General background info on my work with film

Since the spring of 2009, I’ve worked on about 30 commercials, a handful of short films, music videos and one feature. I do Location Scouting, Props and Set Design. This summer I’m the Art Director of a Norwegian Feature.

My background is from the visual arts where I’ve practiced for more than 10 years, specializing in painting, graphic techniques, location and site-specific installation work as well as photography.

I have been hired onto film projects specifically because of my background as an artist, with a mandate to seek out not only relevant and practically suited facilities and locations, but to propose specific angles and framing for the particular director, based on recognizing the unique character of the given script or film idea. In a sense, I have worked as a “Shot Scout” as well as a Set Designer.

Over the years working as an artist, I have developed a keen sense for detail and visual scrutiny, and my work as a prop-master has sprung off of that knowledge. My experience with all kinds of artistic manufacturing has led me to also do more specialized design and building of unique props, to be used in animation, or environments to be used with blue-screens.

What I have been able to offer the directors and photographers I’ve worked with is my sense of pictorial impact alongside with my practical, hands-on manufacturing skills to help visualize ideas from script work, via location searches and props building through to designing sets and overseeing the art department.

Alongside my artist practice, I have worked for more than 10 years as a projects manager and chief installer of the large-scale murals of American artist Sol LeWitt (his “Wall-Drawings” can be found in practically any major art museum collection in the world).

This work has developed my ability to manage projects that demand very high levels of precision, endurance and technical expertise under conditions that are often chaotic and physically challenging. I believe this managerial experience combines well with my artistic background and my more recent practice to form a unique, refined and versatile toolkit well suited for film work
