Self Reference

2007

Self-reference is the central mode and motif for my work. With the artwork as anchorage, I trace loops of self-reference centrifugally from the work through vision, interpretation and the site of perception. Presuming reference as a construction, I look for designs that determine our vision. Perspective is one such design, and symmetry and convergence are the elements of perspective I use.

In this work, perspective stands for vision and functions as the plane where perception and pictorial design meet: an approximation of vision as it pertains to spatial illusion, a projection of culturally specific ideas of subjectivity and the idealized coherence and fixation of the individual.

The reflexive mode of content in art is well established as a literal self-reference, conflating the subject matter with the medium through methodology and materiality. I seek to address reflexivity not literally, but literarily, via literary interpretation, through referencing other media, stories, myths and cultural tropes.
